Contextual
Teaching and Learning Mathematics as an Effort of Developing Abilities of
Prospective Teachers’ Problem Solving and Mathematical Communication.
This study is experiment with posttest design without
pretest by using control group. Experiment group was given contextual learning
treatment which applied seven main components: constructivism, inquiry,
questioning, learning community, modeling, reflection, and authentic
assessment. The control group was given conventional mathematics learning
treatment. The main purpose of the study is to analyze the quality of students’
problem solving and students’ mathematical communication ability, the quality
of students’ attitude towards contextual teaching and learning, and the
relationship between students’ problem solving ability and their mathematical
communication ability.
The study population subject is the prospective teachers
of first semester, meanwhile the study sample subject are 40 students of mathematics
education program of FKIP Unpas Bandung at first semester. Data were collected
using two types of instruments, namely one set of problem solving ability test,
one set of mathematical communication ability test, and one set questionnaire
of Likert attitude scale.
These instruments have met content and face validities.
The reliability coefficients for problem solving ability test, mathematical
communication ability test, and questionnaire attitude test are 0.755, 0.789,
and 0.764 respectively. The finding of this study indicates : a) viewed from
learning group, the students who obtain contextual teaching and learning either
their problem solving ability or their mathematical communication ability have
better result compared to the students who obtain conventional teaching and
learning; b) there is significant relationship between students’ problem
solving ability and their mathematical communication ability; and c) the
students have positive attitude towards learning with contextual teching and
learning approach, problem solving test, and mathematical communication test.
